The Haunted Castle returns to Warwick Castle this Halloween (21-31 October)

The Haunted Castle returns to Warwick Castle this Halloween (21-31 October), to tell spellbinding stories to guests of all ages with ten attractions and thrills set to entrance the entire family.  By day there is lighthearted fun including Haunted Hollows, Witches Tower and the Dead Centre Stage, while a scarier ambience emerges as darkness falls with actor-led and special effects-rich experiences.

With over 1,100 years of history to draw on, it’s no surprise there are real ghost stories to uncover at Warwick Castle, witness to sieges, battles, lovers’ trysts and royal family intrigue. Reports of the supernatural abound, from the rejected maidservant, heavy with child, lost in a secret passageway to the ghost of murdered Fulke Greville, one time castle owner, slain by his manservant. Sightings of mysterious creatures and unexplained events pepper the castle’s history, and each of their stories are told in The Haunted Castle..

Daytime Family Fun

In the Central Courtyard, foul hags have created The Witches’ Tower by evicting the resident Princesses from their rightful home: little witches and wizards will delight in hearing a gentle ghost story, packed full of magic and mayhem.

In The Haunted Hollows, a family favourite that returns once again this year by popular demand, enchanted statues and magical vegetables hold hidden secrets.  But beware! As daylight fades, the trail grows eerie in the twilight.

Marvel at the steady-handed skill of The Bowman as he shows off his archery skills in Deadly Arrows. For the inspired, there’s also the opportunity to have-a-go at firing arrows. Dead Centre Stage is also suitable for all ages, offering themed fun, games and shows throughout the day – come and hear a real ghost story.

The Mighty Trebuchet fires twice daily throughout Halloween, and the ferociousalloween Fire Joust on River Island is sure to get the heart racing and fists pumping.  The unmistakable thunder of horses’ hooves mixes with knights’ war cries as the horseback heroes push themselves and their steads to the limit in this blazing battle.

Watch out for the Castle characters roaming the ancient site, always happy to share a creepy tale or two with curious guests as they explore.

For older guests

Over in The Castle Dungeon, evocative throughout the year and even more chilling over Halloween, tales of terror, torture and injustice are retold from 11am daily, through live actor shows and gory special effects.  Over 10s only, absolutely no exceptions.

The Doll’s House is certainly not for the faint hearted, promising secrets and scares aplenty for those who dare to entertain the story. This is adults-only for a reason…A truly hair-raising experience, Séance is the ultimate scare at The Haunted Castle this Halloween. No truth is left unsaid, no terror left unleashed. Even those with robust constitutions should entertain the idea of joining this hands-down Halloween horror.

At 5pm, as twilight embraces the Castle, head to the Central Courtyard.  The plague doctor, his grotesque appearance only tolerated so he can treat the pitiable plague-riven souls in Outbreak 1349, leads guests on a truly haunting live-actor adventure.  The Black Death has returned to Warwick: contagion is immediate, with shocking – and fatal – results. From those wily enough to survive previous outbreaks, the advice is to remember not all walls are built to keep people out!

Every day throughout The Haunted Castle, the following attractions provide plenty of distractions from the ghosts and ghouls:

  • Horrible Histories Maze – get lost in time with Rattus Rattus
  • Birds of Prey owl spectacular, twice daily
  • History Tours – free and guided by experts: packed with grizzly facts
  • Towers & Ramparts
